FAQ
Questions about the paths, the numbers and the packet
Ten answers on coverage, cost, training, checks, space, storage and corrections.
Reference only, not legal advice. Requirements change; confirm with the licensing agency before you apply or renew. This page describes what the linked official sources say as of the verification date. It is not a determination that a home will be licensed.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a reference that describes what official state pages, rules and forms say as of a recorded date. It links each source and deliberately does not tell you that your home is compliant or will be licensed. For a decision about your home, confirm with the licensing agency or a lawyer in your state.
Which states are covered?
Version 1 covers Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Georgia. Each state has a different licensing structure, so packs are added one at a time after the rule and the agency page are read. No date is promised for the next state.
Why is Illinois listed under a new agency?
Illinois moved child care licensing from DCFS to the Illinois Department of Early Childhood on 1 July 2026. The licensing rules transferred, and the state says providers should contact IDEC. The pack uses IDEC for the current agency and still cites the DCFS-published Rule 406 and application form, because those are the documents in force.
How much does a home daycare license cost?
It depends on the state and the permit. Texas charges $35 plus $1 per child of capacity for a licensed home. California charges $73 for 1 to 8 children and $140 for 9 to 14. Florida charges $25 to register, $50 to license a family child care home and $60 for a large home. Illinois charges nothing for the license. Georgia charges $50 a year. Local inspections and fingerprint vendors can add costs.
How many training hours do I need before I start?
California requires 16 hours of pediatric health and safety training. Florida requires 35 hours before registration: a 30-hour course plus 5 hours of early literacy. Illinois requires 15 hours of pre-service training within the year before applying. Georgia requires 10 hours across five areas plus CPR and first aid. Texas requires pediatric first aid and CPR before licensing, then 30 clock hours a year.
What background checks are required?
The scope differs. Texas runs fingerprint-based Texas and FBI checks plus central registry and sex offender checks on covered persons. California runs DOJ, Child Abuse Central Index and FBI checks on the applicant and adults in the home. Florida uses level 2 screening, including household members over 12. Illinois checks everyone 13 and older, with fingerprints at 18. Georgia requires a comprehensive records check for adults 17 and older in the home or present during care.
Do I need a certain amount of space?
Where a state publishes a number, the pack quotes it. Texas requires 30 square feet indoors per child and 80 square feet outdoors per child using the area at once. Illinois requires 35 square feet per child plus 20 more for each child under 30 months. Georgia requires 35 square feet per child. Florida publishes 35 square feet indoors and 270 square feet outdoors for a large family child care home, not for a small one. California does not publish a per-child number for family child care homes in the chapter reviewed.
Where are my checklist ticks stored?
In this browser, using localStorage, one key for the path and one for the documents. There is no account and nothing is uploaded. Clearing site data or switching browsers removes the ticks, so print the packet if you want a permanent copy.
Does the site use cookies or analytics?
No. There are no cookies, no analytics script, no advertising script and no external requests. The only stored values are the state you last opened and your checklist ticks, both on your device. The privacy page lists the exact keys.
A rule changed or a link is dead. How do I report it?
Email contact@wheelchairrampcalculator.com with the state, the URL you checked and the date. Corrections are re-checked against the official page, and the state’s verification date changes only when the source is actually re-read.
Still stuck?
Your state licensing office can confirm the form it wants and the date it will accept it. If the problem is on this site, use the contact page.
